John Langstraat, 77, of Sibley died unexpectedly Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998 at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. Services were held on Friday, Feb. 6 at First Reformed Church in Sibley. The Rev, Gary Van Heukelom, the Rev. Brad Langstraat and the Rev. Kim Skattum officiated. Burial was in Holnan Township Cemetery under the direction of the Walton, Roste and Vogel Funeral Home in Sibley.

John was born Oct. 31, 1920 near Newkirk, the son of William and Jennie (VanMeeteren) Langstraat. He was raised on the family farm near Newkirk and attended country school. After receiving his education, he farmed with his father until 1945 when he began fanning on his own. He married Henrietta Mastbergen in December 1946 in Archer. In 1955 they moved to a farm near Sibley. Mrs. Langstraat died July 16,1970. John married Ida Mouw-Thompson on June 2, 1972 in Sioux Falls.

He was employed with Fanners Mutual Insurance in Sibley, then returned to farming. He retired in 1993 and they moved into Sibley in October 1996. Mr. Langstraat was a member of the First Reformed Church where he taught Sunday School, was a past deacon and an elder and in the past few years was a calling elder. He served on the board of directors for Hope Haven and the Bigelow United Co-op Elevator. He was a trustee for Viola Township and he and his wife did volunteer mission work in the southern United States and Mexico. Mr, Langstraat enjoyed singing with the Senior Saints.

Survivors include his wife; four sons and their wives, Warren and Mary Louise of Wassenaar, Netherlands, Arnie and Diane of Sibley, Harlan and Dorothy of Eagan, Minn., and Vem and Joey of Louis ville, Colo a stepdaughter, Judy Witcher of Denver, Colo.; a stepson, Greg Thompson of Le Mars; 13grandchildren; a great grandson; two sisters, Angeline Torrenga of Clinton, Wis. and Jennie and her husband Gene VandeBrake of Maurice; three brothers, Dick and his wife Minnie, and Pete, all of Orange City and Howard and his wife Joy of Sibley; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Henrietta, his parents and three brothers, Cornie, Bill and Walter.
