Hawarden Independent, December 13, 1943

H. B. Dalgliesh, 81, a long time resident of Chatsworth, passed away at the Hawarden hospital at 1:30 Monday morning from pneumonia. He was taken suddenly ill at his place of business last Thursday morning and was removed to the hospital Saturday night.

Funeral services wee held at St. Patrick's church in Akron at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning with Rev. G. Ernst officiating. Burial was in the Catholic Cemetery at Akron.

Hugh Barr Dalgliesh was born in Canada on November 28, 1864. He came to the United States with his parents when a small boy locating at Rock Rapids. When a young man he went to Omaha and was united in marriage there with Mary Hopkins on December 1, 1887. In 1896 he came to Akron and he moved to Chatsworth in 1900. He operated an elevator until 1910, when he moved onto a farm just west of Chatsworth. Later he returned to Chatsworth and managed the Farmers elevator for a time and then engaged in the implement business. At the time of his death, he operated a filling station.

He is survived by his wife and seven children, Harry, Ben, Gene, Mrs. Edna Lamoureux, Mrs. Marie Schumacher and Mrs. Josephine Adams of Sioux City and Mrs. Marcella Vander Hamm of Hawarden. Four children preceded him in death. There are 31 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Mr. Balgliesh took an active part in the civic and public affairs of Chatsworth. He served on the town council and was a member of the school board as president, director and treasurer for many years. During all his years in Chatsworth the Dalgliesh family was always represented in school by one or more pupils until last year.

Mr. Dalgliesh was of a genial disposition and was familiarly known as "Pap" to his many friends in the Chatsworth community.
