One of the saddest accidents in the history of this community is the tragic death of Miss Kate Poppen. Last Saturday, being in a hurry to start the kitchen are, she poured some kerosene into the stove, and hardly had the oil touched the fire when the can exploded scattering the burning-liquid over her clothes. Parties In the yard heard the sound of the explosion and promptly came to the rescue, but the instant was long enough for the fire to do its deadly work; she suffered till Sunday noon, when death came to her relief. At the time of the accident her father was visiting m Michigan and did not get back here till yesterday. The funeral took place today from the Christian Reformed church. Deceased was about 22 years old, she was an active and devout Christian, of amiable disposition and noble character, the mainstay m a family of motherless children. There is universal sympathy for the stricken family

From an account on ancestry.com Kate’s parents were Albert Poppen born 28 Feb 1860 Zeeland Michigan died 10 Oct 1944, mother was Henrietta Walcott 1860-1895, married 2 Aug 1878 Vriesland, Michigan. Chidren were Kate 1878-1900, Albert 1880, Jantje 1882, Annie 1885, John 1887, Henry 1889, Clara 1892, Jacob 1892 and Margaret 1904. )
