From the LeMars Sentinel of July 23, 1901
John Wilkens, a young man about twent y - two years old, working for Ernest Rath. in Grant township, succumbed one day last week to the effects of heat prostration. While in the field he was son stroke and on Saturday died from the effects. He was a hard working industrious young man and had been working on different farms in Plymouth county for the past few years, when he came from Germany. His funeral was held Sunday at the Grant township cemetery.

There was also an article in the Alton Democrat of Jul 27, 1901
John Wilkins, a farm hand of twenty-two, working for E. J. Rath southeast of twon was over come by the heat and died Saturday. he was in the harvest field and started for the house by never reached it alive.
