Frederick D. Lutgens was born in Hanover province, Germany, on April 25, 1854. ln 1871 in company with his brother Henry he emigrated, to America, coming to Winneshiek county, in this state. One-year later he came to Sioux county. For several years he worked out and later on he, with his brother Henry, purchased the Austin Carver homestead. In May 1879 Mr. Lutgens was married to Miss Maggie Funck, the one who survives him. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Lutgens, three girls and three boys, the oldest having died in infancy. Mr. Lutgens has but recently returned from a visit to his mother in Germany. Ten years ago he visited his mother and then promised, her that in ten years he would, return for another visit Last, year in contemplating, his recent visit he said he thought he should keep his prornise as he felt if he did not the opportunity would pass by forever. On Christmas day the family were reunited in the German fatherland, the first time they had been together in a period covering thirty years. In Macsh the Lutgens party returned. Mr. Lutgens death was attributed to heart failure combined with dropsy. He was one of the most highly respected citizens of this community. For years past he has baen one of our township trustees, having been elected always without opposition. The number of friends from Hull and the surrounding country who attended the funeral showed the high respect the people of this portion of the county felt toward Mr. Lutgens.
