Harvey was born May 26, 1936 at Sheldon, IA, only child of John and Cornelia (Bliek) Van Meeteren. The family moved to Paramount, CA when Harvey was young. Shortly after moving, his parents divorced and Harvey lived with his father and later with his mother until he decided to move back to South Dakota in 1952 at the age of 16. He worked and lived with a farmer in NW Iowa for the summer and enrolled in high school in Sheldon that fall, but was not allowed to attend school without a legal guardian in the state. As a result, he returned to California and worked at a driving range putting up fencing. He came back to SD and lived and worked for Olden Warner the summer of 1953; milked cows for his aunt and uncle at Artesia, CA for the winter; and returned to Oldens the summer of 1954. Harvey worked putting in underground telephone and electric wire in California until hauling sealed corn for Bud Duncan early 1958. Harvey was drafted into the U.S. Army in September of 1958 and served in Augsburg, Germany and obtained his high school GED. After being discharged in 1960, Harvey started a cornshelling business purchasing a 10 year old cornsheller from Harry Anderson (shelling for 44 years) and started farming in 1962. Harvey married Ellen Harris on June 23, 1963 at Fairview, SD. Together they lived near Hudson and raised their 3 children.

Survived by his wife, Ellen; two sons: Terry (Lynn) Van Meeteren and their children, Morgan and Zac all of Canton, SD, Wayne (Mollie) Van Meeteren and their children, Sadie, Bree, Luke, and Mitch all of Harrisburg, SD: daughter, Paula (Paul) Hammond and their children, Sarah, Jack, and Joseph all of Sioux Falls, SD.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, John and Cornelia; one infant grandson, Shane Van Meeteren.
