Verdella "Del" Alma Van Meeteren, the daughter of William F. and Lydia (Harder) Willert, was born June 14, 1926 on a farm near Verdi, Minnesota, where she attended school and graduated from Verdi High School in 1944. Verdella moved to Sheldon with a girl friend and worked at the Penguin, Hollander’s Five & Dime, and the Golden Rule. On November 21, 1948, Del was united in marriage to Howard Donald Van Meeteren in Verdi, Minnesota. After their marriage the couple made their home in Sheldon, Iowa, where she helped her husband, Howard with the business. Howard preceded her in death on May 11, 2005 and Del remained in her home and continued to help out in the shop for her son, Brad. Verdella passed away on Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center in Sheldon, Iowa, reaching the age of 82 years, 9 months and 4 days.
Del was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheldon; she was active with Ladies Aid and other church activities. She was a past member of the Garden and Flower Club. She enjoyed baking and decorating cakes and had taught a class at NCC on Cake Decorating. She also enjoyed braiding rugs, collecting dolls, painting and all art work, going to garage sales, playing cards, decorating her home for the holidays. She loved to dance, spend the summers in Okoboji, attending the Okoboji Summer Theater and most of all she enjoyed entertaining friends and family.
Verdella is survived by her two sons, Brad Van Meeteren of Sheldon, Iowa and Bruce Van Meeteren and his wife, Julie of Glenwood, Iowa; two granddaughters, Brooke and Breanna; two sisters, Angie Otkin of Verdi, Minnesota and Bernie Dombeck of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three brothers, Donald, Earl and Orville Willert; and a sister, Arlene Stevenson.
