Mrs. Tena Van Marel, age 97, of Orange City, passed away on Sunday, August 22, 2010, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 27, at 10:00am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City with the Rev. Dr. Perry De Groot officiating. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4:00pm Thursday at the church, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Arrangements were made with Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Tena was born on October 27, 1912, the daughter of John Dirk and Lucy (Vande Berg) Van Maanen near Rock Valley. She was raised on farms near Rock Valley and Sioux Center, where she attended country schools.On June 28, 1935, she married William Van Marel. For the first seven years of their marriage, they made their home with her brother and his wife, Bert and Gert Van Maanen, on a farm near Sioux Center. They then moved to the Van Marel family farm northwest of Orange City. In February of 1974, they retired into Orange City. "Bill" passed away on November 18, 1987, in Sioux City, after more than 52 years of marriage.
Tena worked on their farms and was a cook for Senior Citizens meetings. She was a member of the First Reformed Church.
She enjoyed playing cards, tending to her flower and vegetable gardens, traveling on bus tours, and doing handywork. She especially liked visiting her out-of-town children and grandchildren. She was known as a private prayer warrior, great cook, and she liked to walk to stay fit.
In January of 2007, Mrs. Van Marel moved to the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City.
Survivors include her three children and their spouses, Lucy and Creston Hoekstra, of Sheldon; Carl and Susie Van Marel, of Rockwall, Texas; and William, Jr., and Kathy Van Marel, of Orange City; fourteen grandchildren, Lila (Gayrey) Whitfield, of Remsen; Twila (Harlan) Oolman, of Orange City; Darrell (Cheryl) Hoekstra, of Alton; Kevin (Sandy) Hoekstra, of Sioux Center; Lyle (Teresa) Hoekstra, of Sheldon; Karla (Henry) Byl, of Sioux Center; Jay (Norma) Van Marel, of Richardson, Texas; Jaylynn (Kevin) Jeffers, of Longview, Texas; Melissa (Steve) Bradley, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; Valerie (Jay) James, of Rockwall, Texas; Brandon (Kelly) Van Marel, of St. Louis, Missouri; and Blayne (Candace) Van Marel, Brittany (Ryan) Kiel, and Britton Van Marel, of Orange City; 36 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson; and a sister-in-law, Cynthia Cleveringa, of Sioux Center.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant great-grandson, Anthony Hoekstra, two sisters and five brothers, Nellie (Klaas) Driesen, Gysbert Van Maanen, Walt Van Maanen, Gerrit Van Maanen, Gert (Bert) Rus, Bert Van Maanen, and Ike Van Maanen.
