William was the son of Jacob Arie Van Marel and Kathryn Cornelia (Nienhuis) Van Marel.
On June 28, 1935, he married Tena Van Maanen at Sioux Center. To this union were born three
children, Mrs. Creston (Lucille) Hoekstra of Sheldon; Carl of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and William Jr.
of Orange City. He spent most of his life on the Van Marel family farm between Orange City and Sioux Center. In 1974, Mr. and Mrs. Van Marel semi-retired to Orange City. He was a lifetime member of the First Reformed Church.
In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by fourteen grandchildren, six great- grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. Will (Irene) Te Slaa and Mrs. Gerrit (Gertrude) Te Slaa, both of Hull; and Mrs. Clarence W. (Cynthia) Cleveringa of Sioux Center. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Henrietta Riphagen, Tena, and Mabel Cleveringa; and three brothers, Jacob, Arie, and Irwin.
