Corneilius "Casey" Peter Van Maasdam, son of Peter and Anna (Hibma) Van Maasdam, was born on July 13, 1916 in Boyden, IA., Casey was baptized and later confirmed at the Fist Reformed Church in Maurice, Iowa, After completing his schooling, Casey worked for several different farms around the Morris, Iowa area until enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1944. While in the U.S. Army, Casey served overseas in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations for ten months
mainly with the 7th Medical Battalion which handled all medical transportation for the entire 7th Division. Casey served with this outfit as motor sergeant which consisted of supervising the work of 13 mechanicsand 80 drivers. He was responsible for requisitioning parts, all clerical administration and repair of 116 vehicles which included ambulances, trucks and jeeps. Casey's decorations during WW II in the U.S. Army included the American Theater Ribbon , the APT Ribbon, Victory Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal. After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1946, Casey moved back to Iowa and on June 9, 1948, he was united in marriage to Donna Stevens in Nashua, Iowa. After moving back to Iowa, Casey started his own business, running a feed grinder until the middle 50's when, at that time, the couple moved to Hutchinson, Minnesota. After several moves, the couple moved back to the Harris, Iowa area and Casey worked for the City of Harris, drove bus, and worked at the County Co-op Company until his illness in 1979. Since 1979, Casey had lived in different care facilities and had entered the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Lakefield in 1986 where he had resided since. Casey was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lakefield and the Hanson-Ward V FW Post 4743 in Worthington. Casey enjoyed fishing, traveling and most of all, hisgrandchiildren.
Casey passed away Thursday morning January 27, 2000 at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Lakefield at the age of 83 years.
Casey is survived by his wife, Donna Van Maasdam of Le Mars, Iowa; three daughters, Lucy Lemker and her husband, Mike of Dike, Iowa; Colleen Meyer and her husband, Mike of Estherville, Iowa; Marlee Schwarting and her husband, Kevin of Lakefield; two sons, Darwin Van Maasdam and his wife, Edna of Lake Park, Iowa; Stewart Van Maasdam and his friend, Sally Johnson of Spencer, Iowa; two sisters, Kathryn Brown and her husband, James of Atwater, MN; Elizabeth Smits of Worthington; fifteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Casey is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, 'Peter Van Maasdam.
