Olivia Van Gronigen
Mrs. John (Olivia) Van Gronigen, age 91 of Alton, Iowa passed away Monday, October 12, 1998, after a lengthy illness, at the Careage of Newton Nursing Home in Newton, Iowa. Funeral services were held Friday, October 16, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton, Iowa, with Rev. James Tigges officiating. Burial was at the Alton St. Mary's Cemetery. Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen was in charge of arrangements.
Olivia, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Jane (Schemmel) Oberman, was born on January 8, 1907 at Granville, Iowa. Olivia was raised in Granville and attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Granville until the eleventh grade. She completed her twelfth year of education at Holy Name High School in Marcus, graduating in 1924.
Her marriage to John took place April 19, 1927 at Granville. They made their home in Alton. She moved to Newton in October 1989 and lived with her daughter. She had been a resident of Careage of Newton Nursing Home since April 4, 1990. John died August 27, 1981.
Olivia was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and St. Mary's Rosary Society.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Joan and Robert Matheson of Newton, Iowa, and Jane and Larry Iwan of Hong Kong, China; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Alvis (Grace) Oberman of Sioux City, Iowa. Olivia was preceded in death by one son, Glenn; 6 brothers, Joseph, Lawrence, George, Alvis, Edmund, and Isidore; 4 sisters, Mary Jane Oberman, Mrs. George (Rose) Kuhl, Mrs. John (Loretta) Mulder, and Edmunda Oberman.
