Gladys D. Smeek, 85, of Sioux Falls, S.D. died April 17,1999 at the Prince of Peace Retirement Center in Sioux Falls. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 20 at 10:30 a.m. at the First
Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Falls. Burial was at Hills of Rest Memorial Park in Sioux Falls,
Gladys was born Nov. 14, 1913 at Sioux Center, the daughter of John and Nellie (Kuiken) Vander Meulen. She was raised and educated in the Orange City area. She married Ray Smeenk on Sept. 3, 1940 in Orange City. They farmed near Harrisburg, S.D. for many years. He died April 18, 1984. Gladys continued to live on the family farm until March, 1997 when she moved to Trail Ridge Retirement Center in Sioux Falls. Mrs. Smeenk was a member of First Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Falls and the Golden Hour Bible Study. She was also active in the United Methodist Women's group at the Harrisburg United Methodist Church. She enjoyed
gardening, crocheting and knitting.
Survivors include two sons, Norman Smeenk and his wife, Joyce of Harrisburg, S.D., and Merlyn Smeenk and his wife, Lonna of Harrisburg, S .D.; a daughter, Donna Stanford and her husband,
Gary of Sioux Falls, S.D.; six grandchildren, Linda Tinklenberg and her husband, Doug; Jerod Smeenk and his friend Sarita De Vries; Ryon Smeenk and his wife Sharon; Neil Smeenk, and
Lorie and David Standord; five great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
