From the Alton Democrat of Jun 8, 1901.
Matlock News.
William Johnson, a young man living near Sheldon met death in a tragic manner on the road near Ashton last Saturday evening. He was driving a horse hitched to a cart and was found dead with his body partly out of the vehicle and his head between the spokes of the wheel. From the blood and hair on the spokes and the condition of the man's head and face it was evident that the had traveled some distance after the body had fallen into the wheel. The coroner's jury brought in a verdict of death by heart disease. The deceased was a single man of about thirty years and had always lived iwth his mother on a farm near Sheldon.
(The mother's name could not be readily found. Any one with information on his family please contact our page coordinator)
