John Davelaar, 85, of Sioux Center, died unexpectedly Friday, July 27, at the Fellowship Village Nursing Home in Inwood.

Services were 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center with the Rev. Robert Holwerda officiating. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center. Visitation was Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.

Davelaar was born October 2, 1904 in The Netherlands, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Henry John and Cornelia (Vander Pol) Davelaar. He moved with his parents to the United States in 1911 to Chandler, Minnesota and attended school there.

He married Nellie Wassink, February 2, 1934, at her parents home in Sioux Center. After their marriage, they farmed near Sioux Center until their retirement in 1963, when they moved to town. On June 26, 1989 they moved to the Fellowship Village Nursing Home in Inwood.

He was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church and served as an elder in the consistory. He also served on the Christian school board in Sioux Center.

Survivors include his wife; five sons, Henry John and Mary of Bigelow, MN; Bill and Hertilda of Maurice; Arnold and Linda of Anacortes, WA; Floyd and Joyce of Rock Valley, and Gerrit and Eleanor of Inwood; three daughters, Carolyn Ploegstra of Denver, CO; Florence and Orville Kooiman of Sioux Center, and Nelvia and Dave Sterkenburg of Wyoming, Michigan; 25 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and one sister, Bertha Schiebout of Edgerton, MN.

He was preceded in death by three children, Marvin and Muriel, infant twins, and Helen, an infant daughter; one great grandchild, Wesley Davelaar, and one sister, Jennie Kuhl.
