Gertrude Anna Hulstein, the daughter of Dirk and Elizabeth (Vander Kamp) Wesselink, was born on August 25, 1914, near Archer, Iowa. She spent her childhood years in the Archer and Hospers, Iowa areas.

On June 2, 1938, Gertrude was united in marriage to Stephen Hulstein at Hospers, Iowa. Following their marriage the couple operated a grocery store at the May City Business Corner and then moved to Hartley. They later moved to Sanborn where they lived for many years and Gertrude worked in the kitchen of the Prairie View Nursing Home for 10 years. Steve passed away on April 9, 1992. Gertrude remained in her home for four more years before moving to the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon for 10 years. In April of 2006, she moved to Heron Lake, MN, to be closer to her family. Gertrude passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2011, at the Lakeview Assisted Living in Heron Lake at the age of 97.

She was a member of the First Reformed Church of Sanborn where she belonged to the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed camping and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Myra (Bill) Stewart of Heron Lake, MN, and Kenny Hulstein of Sioux City, IA; four granddaughters, Melinda (Joe) Miller and their children Mariah, Maison and Maxwell of Jeffers, MN, Marsha (Steve) Haugen and their children Alyssa and Britni of Alexandria, MN, Michelle (Kraig) Magnussen and their children Kenneth, Kody and Karter of Fulda, MN, and Melissa Jongma of Box Elder, SD, several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, son-in-law Marvin Jongma, three brothers Walt, Richard and Fred Wesselink, four sisters Mina Saupe, Tillie Nehls, Winnie DeBruin and an infant sister Elizabeth Dorothy Wesselink.
