From the Alton Democrat of June 8, 1901.
On Monday last the community was shocked and saddened by the news that the little four year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Wissink had met an accidential death at their home just east of town. At about four o'clock the little one, who had been playing about the dooryard, disappeared form the mother's sight, but was missed by her before she had been gone five minutes. There had been no outcry or noise, but the mother found her little one stilled in death. The accident which ended her sweet young life occurred at the chicken house where the little one had apparently gone in search of eggs. It seems that in climbing about a rack of nests she pulled them over upon her and was killed. A dark spot upon her right temple told the cruel tale of her death. The distracted mother started for the field to tell her husband but fell in a swoon before reaching him. Dr. Smith was hastily called but could do nothing.
All who know these estimable people will realize the peculiar sadness of the blow that has befallen them. Only last August they ost a little one by sickness and several years ago another child fell into the tub of water and wwas drowned. It seems that they are having more than their share of sorrow. H. A. Wissink of Sioux Center, Jno. Scholten and family of Boyden and G. J. Scholten of Hospers attended the funeral.
(The father was Karel 'Carl' Wissink 1867-1956 married Mar 2, 1892 to Mina Geertruida Scholten 1864-1950. Their children Gerrit Martin 1892-1895, Bernhard Gerhard 1895-1899, Hendrika Gerdina 1897-1900, Anna Maria 1899-1906, Gerrit Martin 1903, Charels 1907, )
