DEBRUIN, HOEGEN, VANDERVOORT

Alton Democrat of May 12, 1900

A.(John not A.) De Bruin died at the home of
his daughter, Mrs. D. Ekelman, in the southeast part of the city, on Saturday last at 9 o'clock of the infirmities of old age. The old gentleman
was eighty-four and had been ill for several months, most of the time bedfast. Deceased came to Sioux county from Holland about seven years ago and took up his abode at Orange City where he stayed two years before moving to Alton. Besides the daughter with whom he lived he has a son, A.(Albert) De Bruin, who lives near the Alton mill and works on the Northwestern section. Funeral services by Rev. Lepeltak were held in the Reformed church Monday at
two o'clock.
(Submitter went on a chase for an A. DeBruin with the known data from the obit but couldn't find one. The Sioux County Death index listed a John DeBruin died at 84 yr on May 5, 1900. Further investigation led to it being definitely determined the nane was Jan 'John' De Bruin born 1816 at Driel Geld. Neth. married on 14 May 1851 Arnhem Neth to Elisabeth Hoegen born 1821 Apeldoorn. Jan's parents were Aalbert De Bruin and Aaltje Vander Voort. Elisabeth's parents were Wouter Hoegen and Maria Pepelenbosch. Elisabeth died 6 Aug 1859 at Driel, Heteren Geld. Neth at age 39 years. They had three children one Hendrina died at 3 years 13 Sep 1860, the other two Mary and Albert came to the USA with their father in 1892. Mary married Dirk Ekelman and Albert married Johanna. )
