Alton Democrat of March 3, 1900
Death of John Haselman.
The last sad rites in respect to the late John Haselman were performed at the Alton cemetery Thursday evening at 6:30 o'clock, the remains having arrived here by team from Alvord a short time before. In regard to the sad death of this estimable young man, the Alvord Democrat
says -
A shadow of gloom and sorrow passed over this community Wednesday morning when it was announced
that John Haselman was dead, although the dread news had not been unexpected for several days.
It was at 10:30 o'clock, Tuesday evening, February 27, 1900, that his spirit was released from earthly suffering, and the change was made
quietly and without apparent pain.
He was taken with a mild form of typhoid fever in January, from which he rallied about February 1, and it was supposed that he had fully recovered.
Ten days afterward, however, he was again taken seriously ill, this time with congestion of lungs, later followed by hemorrhage of the bowels, which latter trouble was the real cause of death. John Haselman was a few days past 27
years of age, having been born at Dyersville, Iowa, in January, 1873.
When 21 years of age he removed to Alton, for several, years being in the employ of Dr. Smith of that place.
He afterwards learned the cigarmaker's trade and about three years ago came to Alvord, soon afterwards operating a cigar factory here for a
short time. He was a young man of most exemplary habits, quiet demeanor and honest heart one who
could be trusted in any position. In social life he was a favorite with all, and we do not believe he had an enemy in all his accpiaintance. He was a devout Catholic and died firm the faith and promise of eternal life. Telegrams were sent to his parents, brothers and sisters, announcing his serious condition, but
only one brother, Chris Haselman of Alton, was here when he passed away. His parents live at Dyersville,Iowa, three sisters live at Dubuque,
one sister lives at Newland and three
brothers live respectively at Alton, Bankson and Norwav. He has always made his home with his brother Fred in Alvord, to whom especially the
people of this community extend sincere condolence. Funeral servicesvwere held at Sacred Heart church Thursday morning. Rev. Father Desmond celebrating the mass after making touching remarks from the words,
'Be ye ready, for ye know not the hour"
Deceased was well known in Alton and many friends here join his bereaved relatives in their grief. Among those here from abroad were the father of deceased, A. Haselman of Dyersville, his brothor Barney from Norway and a sister, Mrs. Newman, from Dubuque. The two last named returned to their homes Friday morning.
