November 4, 1924 - March 23, 2012
Mrs. Hendrina Van Gelder, age 87, of Orange City, passed away on Friday, March 23, 2012, at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.
There will be a celebration of her life on Wednesday, March 28, at 11:00am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Haverdink and Mr. Jay Van Gelder will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. .
Hendrina Marcia was born on November 4, 1924, in rural Orange City, the daughter of Gerrit M. and Rosa (Kuiken) Raak. She was raised in the Orange City area.
On May 18, 1945, she married James Van Gelder at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. They lived around Orange City for a short time and then moved to a farm north of Alton. In 1951, they moved to south of Carnes, where she was a homemaker and farm wife. In April of 1977, they moved into Orange City. In January of 2005, she began having health problems, and since August of 2006, she has resided at the Heritage House.
Hendrina was a member of the First Reformed Church, where in the early years, she played the organ for the Sunday School. Later, she was active in the Mary-Martha Circle, serving as a pianist.
She enjoyed crocheting and playing scrabble, and she made afghans for her family members. She also volunteered with the activities at the Heritage House. She and Jim enjoyed wintering in Arizona for many years.
Survivors include her husband of more than 66 years; a son and his wife, Robert and Mary Van Gelder, of Alton; a daughter and her husband, Cheryl and Dale Hiemstra, of Orange City; six grandchildren, Jay (Shantel), Bryan (Kelly), and Timothy (Andrea) Van Gelder, and Eric (Becky), Kristi, and Brooke Hiemstra; eleven great-grandchildren, Shayler, Kamdyn, Brett, Carter, Carson, and Brendan Van Gelder, and Jayden, Teygan, Heydan, Ameyah, and Kaseyn Hiemstra; and a sister and her husband, Geneva Betty and Wilbur Van Gelder, of Le Mars.
She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant son, Larry.
