Florence S. Paulsen
Florence S. Paulsen, 90, of Granville, passed away peacefully on Monday, Aug. 6, 2007 at Heartland Care Center in Marcus. The Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2007 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville. The Rev. Richard Ball will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Granville. Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen is in charge of arrangements.
Florence was born on Sept. 12, 1916, in rural Marcus to William and Mary (Rassel) Roethler. She was raised on a farm southeast of Marcus and received her education at Holy Name Catholic School in Marcus. After her graduation she attended Western Union College at Le Mars,
where she obtained her teacher's certificate. She then did house keeping for her brother Ray Roethler and the Ralph Porter family at Marcus. On Feb. 12, 1939, she married Wilken Paulsen at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. The couple farmed southwest of Calumet for three years. They then moved to a farm south of Granville. In April of 1976 they retired to their new home in Granville. Wilken died on March 15, 2006. Florence had been a resident of Heartland Care Center since Oct. 15, 2006. Florence was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. In her younger years she was an active member of the Catholic Daughters of America and St. Joseph's Guild. She was an avid gardener, loved to bake (bread, cookies, etc.). She embroidered and crocheted and loved to read before she lost her sight. She made many quilts. Survivors include three daughters and their husbands, Mary Jean and Jim Nilles of Escondido, Calif., and Linda and Tom Linden and Janice and John Brooks, all of Granville; three sons, Ronald and his wife Cheryl, Steven and his wife Marilyn and Richard, all of Granville;
25 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; son James Edward and daughter Rose Ann, both in infancy; sisters
Sister Mary Jarlath (Isabel Roethler) B.V.M., and Gladys Betsworth; three brothers, Raymond, Ralph and Kenneth Roethler; and several nieces.
