Mrs. Verla Smit, age 53, of Orange City, passed away on Thursday, March 15, 2012, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer.
There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, March 20, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. Pastors Mark Haverdink and Nick Koenig will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Monday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Verla Kay was born on October 1, 1958, in Orange City, the daughter of William and Kay (Van Leeuwen) Beltman. graduated from the Unity Christian High School in Orange City. On July 9, 1977, she married Dale E. Smit in Hospers. They lived mostly in Orange City, where Verla was a homemaker. She was also a cook at the Pioneer Memorial Home and the Wagon Wheel Restaurant, both in Orange City. More recently, she worked in the production department at Staples Promotional Products in Orange City. Verla was a member of the First Reformed Church. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of more 34 years; four children, Matthew Smit, and his wife, Shawna, of Alton; Brent Smit, of Orange City; Jennifer, and her husband, Kurt De Groot, of Rock Valley; and Jason Smit, of Remsen, and his fiance, Krystal Gotto; three grandchildren, Haydn De Groot and Briana and Alexis Gotto; her parents, Bill and Kay Beltman, of Sheldon; two brothers and a sister, Gerald (Jane) Beltman, of Hospers; Shirley Hatterman, of Paullina; and Don (Linda) Beltman, of Sheldon; and many nephews and nieces. She is also survived by her husband's family, his mother, Gert (John) Sjaarda, of Sioux Center; and four sisters, Tyanne (Dennis) Downing, of Denver, Colorado; Donna (Verlyn) Zwart, of Hawarden; Carla Anderson, of Jefferson, South Dakota; and Bonnie Uhrich, of Sioux Center. She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Tom Smit; a sister-in-law, Beverly Smit; and two brothers-in-law, Dwight Anderson and Terry Hatterman.
