Two Iowa National Guard soldiers were killed Friday morning, August 27 in Johnston when their Iowa Army National Guard tractor-trailer went off the road and rolled in a ditch after leaving from Camp Dodge military base.
They have been identified by the Iowa National Guard as Bruce J. Pollema, 30, of Hull and Dustin S. Colby, 20, of the Mason City area. They were both assigned to the National Guard's 2168th Transportation Company based in Sheldon. Johnston Police Sgt Lynn Aswegan reported that Pollema and Colby were crushed inside the truck cab
and were pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the crash is unknown as it happened in daylight on dry pavement and on a straight stretch of road. The truck tractor was pulling a flatbed trailer with a second empty flatbed trailer on top. The men were in a convoy leaving Camp Dodge en route to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and that their next mission would be the Persian Gulf. Pollema and Colby were among the 169 soldiers who left from Sheldon on Thursday, August 26th. A send off with more than 3,000 people attending was held on Wednesday. Several dignitaries including
Iowa's U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley took part in the sendoff. The company will most likely spend a year in the Middle East serving under Operation
