Death of Beloved Pastor
Rev. J. D. Meyer, pastor of the Christ congregation of Grant township, Plymouth county, passed away last Friday morning at his home at the age of 77 years. He was taken ill last November and although he improved at times he grew weaker gradually from that time. He had served his church in Plymouth county for almost 40 years and was well known in Plymouth and Sioux counties. He was born in Germany but came to America in 1884.

He was ordained a minister in the Lutheran church in Watertown, Wis., and served a church at that place for four years. Later he served a church in Chicago and in 1895 he came to Plymouth county. Rev. Meyer was united in marriage at Watertown, Wis., to Minnie Markgraf Aug. 13, 1886, and eight children were born to them.

Two sons and one daughter preceded him in death. Mrs. Meyer died in 1897 leaving her husband with five children. In 1899 he was married to Anna Zieger and six children were born to this union. His death is mourned by his 11 children, Mrs. Gerd Von Hagel of LeMars; Mrs. Henry Jannsen of Ireton; John Meyer, now of Germany; Kev. Fred Meyer, Mrs. George Freymiller and Claus Meyer of Scranton, N. D.; Mrs-. Martha Gould of Minnesota; Ernest, Herman, Doretta and Anna at home.

Rev. J. D. Meyer was chairman of the Iowa Lutheran conference and- was a leading spirit in the councils of the church. He wrote a number of these and many papers on theological subjects.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at his late home with Rev. Theo. M. Meyer of Preston township in charge. Services at Christ church were conducted by Rev. F. Meske of Akron, Rev. H. W. Striepe of Arlington, Minn., and Rev. J. J. Vollmar of LeMars. The western Iowa conference was represented by the chairman, Rev. Wm. Zibell of Craig. The committal service was conducted by Rev. Theo. Meyer of Johnson township.
