JOHN G. VAN ES
Mr. John Van Es, age 72, of Orange City, formerly of Newkirk, passed away on Sunday, September 30, 2007, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.
There will be a funeral service on Wednesday, October 3, at 11:00am, at the Newkirk Reformed Church. The Rev. Carroll Brown will officiate. Interment will follow at the Newkirk Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
John was born on February 22, 1935, at Alton, the son of Gerrit J . and Elizabeth (Vander Maten) Van Es. He was raised on a farm near Alton, where he attended the Floyd Rural Independent School.
On November 23,1954, he married Arlene B. Tensen at her parents' home at Sheldon. They farmed at Newkirk, later moving into Newkirk. He also became the transportation director for the MOC-FloydValley Community Schools, retiring in 2000.
In mid-August of this year, John and Arlene moved to the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City.
He was a life-long member of the Newkirk Reformed Church, where he served as a teacher and superintendent of the Sunday School for many years. He also belonged to the Lost Vocal Chords in Sioux City.
John enjoyed attending all kinds of sporting events, including basketball, volleyball, football, baseball, Softball, and soccer. He liked driving the teams to their games, and he attended the state girls' Softball tournaments for seventeen years.
He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports, and he liked gardening and sending E-mails on his computer.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years; three daughters and their husbands, Lila and Jeff De Witt, of Luverne, Minnesota; Helen and Steve Van Den Berg, of Sheldon; and Arlue and Jim Van Ommeren, of Hospers; a son and his wife, Galen and Cathy Van Es; and a daughter, Jolyn Van Es, all of Orange City; twelve grandchildren, Jonathon De Witt; William De Witt, and his wife, Heidi; Daniel De Witt, and his wife, Ashley; Elizabeth De Witt; Eric Van Den Berg, and his wife, Jodi; Jocelyn, and her husband, Dan Moss;
Jennifer, and her husband, Jose Gomez; Alan Van Ommeren, and his wife, Kristina; Angela Van Ommeren; Joshua Van Es, and his fiance', Jenna Koele; Andrew Van Es; and Caitlyn Van Es; five great-grandchildren, Morgan, Carter, and Camden De Witt; Ashlyn Gomez; and Kandice Van Ommeren; a sister, Mrs. Ed (Wilmina) Cleveringa, of Orange City; and a sister-in-law, Darlene Van Es, of Alton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, J . Allen De Witt; three brothers, Frank Van Es, who passed away at the age of 68 years; and two brothers he never knew, another John, who died at 16 years, and another Frank, who died at 6 months; a brother-in-law, Ed Cleveringa; and his wife's parents, Joe and Hattie Tensen.
