Gerrit John was the son of John and Anna (De Vries) Van Gelder. He was raised in the Orange City area and graduated from the Newkirk High School. From 1953 to 1955, he served in the United States Army. On March 16,1956 he married Carol Jean Zevenbergen at Orange City. They farmed northeast of Orange City. "Gary" was also an electrician part-time.
He was a member of the First Reformed Church. Survivors include his wife; three brothers and their wives, Randall and Bertha Van Gelder of Orange City; George and Frances Van Gelder of Colton, California; and Kenneth and Henrietta Van Gelder of Ireton; five sisters, Jennie and her husband, Marion Schalekamp; Margaret and her husband John Reinders; Jo Holland; and Agnes Van Gelder, all of Orange City; and Mary Ann and her husband, Marvin Vlieger of Chandler, Minnesota; and nephews and nieces.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles.
