G. J. TE GROTENHUIS, Sr.
G. J. Te Grotenhuis, sr. passed from this life Sunday, April 2 at midnight, after having been confined to the hospital for 10 weeks with a heart ailment. Mr. Te Grotenhuis was born August 3, 1864 in Gelderland, the Netherlands and came to America with his parents when he was 2 years old. It was while coming to America that he was taken critically ill from which he recovered to experience a lifetime of health which few can claim. Mr. Te Grotenhuis never knew illness until these last weeks. After coming to America his parents settled in Wisconsin where they continued to reside for 8 years. The family then moved to a farm a mile north of Newkirk. On Sept. 18, 1888 Mr. Te Grotenhuis married Miss Dena Kots of Orange City and began housekeeping on a farm, a quarter section of prairie land, 2 miles north of Newkirk. Here they live for 13 years and the children were born there. They then moved to Newkirk living there for 8 more years when they moved to a farm west of Alton. In 1913 they came to Orange City where they resided until the tune of his death. Mr. Te Grotenhuis, an active man was also active in church affairs. He served as Sunday school teacher for almost 40 [*46 or 48?] years and filled the office of Deacon in the church for several years. Surviving him are his wife and 3 sons, James T. Grotenhouse of Orange City, Benjamin and Reuben Te Grotenhuis of Newkirk. 1 son James died in infancy. A daughter, Dena, Mrs. Simon Menning of Newkirk, died Nov. 6 1941. There are grandchildren and 3 great grand-children. Surviving also are 1 sister Jane, Mrs. John De Vries of Hollandale, Minn, and 1 brother Edward Te Grotenhuis of Hotchkiss, Colo. Preceding him in death were his sisters, Mrs. Gt. Kleinwolterink of Sheldon, Mrs. Henry Bomgaars, and brothers Henry Te Grotenhuis, Wm. Te Grotenhuis and John Te Grotenhuis all of Newkirk, the latter having passed away late last fall. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 o'clock at the home and at 1:30 p. m. in the First Ref. church with the Rev. H. Colenbrander officiating. Interment will fee made in the Newkirk cemetery.
