J. H. DEN BESTE.
J. H. Den Beste, 87, who had made his home in Sheldon and vicinity the past 45 years, passed away last Sunday afternoon, July 14 at 2:45 o'clock, at the home of his daughter Mrs. H. P. Haze. He had been ill but one week, death being the result of old age. J. H. Den Beste was bron November 9, 1852 at Gorichem, Netherlands, and died July 14. 1940 at Sheldon, la., aged 87 years, 8 months and 5 days. In 1864, with his parents, he came to the United States and settled in Pella, la., and moved from there to Orange City, where he was one of the first settlers. He later moved to Harrison, S. D., and the past 45 years had lived in Sheldon and vicinity. Mr. Den Beste was engaged in fanning. He was married in 1877 at Pelia to Miss Mary Marcus who preceded him in death. Mr. Den Beste was an active member of the First Reformed church. He is survived by five sons and three daughters, Ed Den Beste of Sibley, John, Joe, Henry and Jake Den Beste all of Archer, Mrs. Henry Haze of Sheldon, (Josie) Mrs. Bernard Peters of Boyden and (Anna) Mrs. Louis Groot of Miles, Wash. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren. One daughter and two sons preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon July 17 at 1 o’cock at the Henry Haze home and at 1-30 at the First Reformed church, Rev. J. A. Vis officiating. Pallbearers were the five sons, Ed, John, Joe, Henry and Jake Den Beste and a son-in-law Henry Haze. Burial was in East Lawn cemetery.
