Mrs. Elizabeth Newburgh (nee Elizabeth Mak) died Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Berrott, at the age of 71 years and three months. She had been confined to the house since September but seemed to be improving until Monday morning when she became very ill and passed away at 10-o'clock. Born, at Pella, Iowa, she came to northwestern Iowa at the age of five years with her parents who settled at LeMars where her father operated a mercantile business. There, the father and the youngest brother died and the mother and four children came to join the early settlers in Sioux county dnring grasshopper times. For many years they operated a grocery store in the building now occupied by Bunkers cleaners. She was united in marriage at Orange City on December 27, 1894, to William Newburgh. One child was born to them. Two years later, in 1896, her husband died which left her face alone the problem of supporting herself and child. She is survived by her daughter Francis, now Mrs. Frank Perrott, by one brother, John Mak, of California, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Zwaag of Sheldon and Mrs. Walter E. Brewster of Woonsocket, S. D. One brother died recently. Funeral services are being held today (Thursday) at 1:30 o'clock at the home and at 2 o'clock at the American Reformed church, with Rev. LeRoy Nattress, the pastor, officiating. Interment will be made in the family plot at the local cemetery.
