MRS. EVERT SCHOLTEN PASSES ON - Buried Tuesday Afternoon in Nassau Cemetery Near Alton.
Mrs. Evert Scholten passed on at her home in Alton a few minutes after midnight on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 13th, following a brief but serious illness. Nellie Marie Cambier was born on July 11th, 1877, at Port Gibson, New York. She was the daughter of pioneer parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Cambier, who came to Sioux county with their children in 1883, and lived for many years on the Gleysteen farm south of Orange City. On March 8th, 1900, she was married to Evert Scholten. Three children were born to them, namely Mrs. Gt. Geurink of Orange City, Mrs. Arthur McCarthy of Auburn, Wash., and Kenneth at home. Besides her husband and children, she is survived by five brothers and sisters, Jacob Cambier of Alton, Mrs. John Mason of Santa Ana, Calif., Peter Cambier, Mrs. Henry Giebink, and John Cambier of Orange City.
Mr. and Mrs. Scholteu lived for 19 years on the farm south of Nassau township cemetery, known as "cemetery hill", and moved to Alton in 1919. They have long been active in community welfare as well as church work. Mrs. Scholten was a member of the First Reformed church and its .....(*?) Society and for 25 years taught in the Sunday school. She was an able Red Cross worker and has always taken a particular interest in caring for the poor and unfortunate, never being too busy to sew for destitute children or to see that the hungry were fed. Her good works were many, though seldom known except to those who were benefited by them. Never especially robust in health she had of late been especially unwell. The slight fall which injured her knee was only a minor injury, and the heart attack which resulted in her passing four days later came as a shock to the family, who have the sympathy of hundreds of friends. Her daughter, Mrs. Arthur McCarthy of Auburn, Wash, arrived Monday and will remain for some time with her father and brother . Mr. and Mrs. Scholten had sold their home and were planning to move with their son Kenneth to the Peter Cambier farm near Sheldon, having expected to make the move next month, though they need not vacant their present home until March, when the now owner, Mr. Peter Lucas, will take possession.
For the present, the family have made no plans for the future. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the First Reformed church, in charge of the pastor, Rev. J. R. Euwema. The church was crowded by the hundreds of friends and relatives, some having come long distances. Notable among these were Mr. and Mrs. John Mason of Santa Ana., Calif., Mrs. Seholten's sister and her husband. Many were present from the neighboring towns and among those from out of town county who attended the services were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Scholten of Edgerton. Miun., Mr. and Mrs. Marinus Scholten of Larchwood, Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Scholten and Mr. and Mrs. Jake Scholten, Mr. and Mrs. D. Visser of Doon, Miss Gladys Cambier and Miss Sadie Cambier of Sioux City, Miss Grace Aalders of Hampton, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Shelser of Sheldon, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Mouw of Le Mars. Special music for the service was provided by a mixed quartet, Mrs. Steve Jasper, Mrs. John Kool, Chas Jansen and Robert Ruisch, while Tillie Verhoef and Angie Kalsbeek sang a duet.
THE ALTON Ia. DEMOCRAT, FRIDAY, Sept. 19, 1930.
