Gerrit Vermeer 1859-1923
Mr. Gerrit Vermeer Sr. was laid on rest last Wednesday, Oct. 24. The deceased was born Dec. 10, 1859 at Hardewijk, Netherlands. At the age of eight he moved to America with his parents and settled in Waupun, Wisc. In 1881 he came to Sioux County. The last part of the way he walked across the prairies. He married in the year 18888 and his widow and eight children mourn his demise. The children are Ed, Jake, Mrs. G. Vande Berg, Mrs. Den Herder, Gerrit Jr., Elizabeth, Priscilla and Ben.

Last week Saturday morning another Sioux Center Pioneer passed on to his eternal reward. Mrs. Gerrit Vermeer Sr. succumbed to a long and painful sickness. Last April he went to Rochester for medical examination and the doctors told him he had cancer and they could do nothing for him, and this disease was the cause of his death. He was born in Harderswyk, Neth on Dec 10th 1859. He came to this country as a lad when 8 years old and spent some 14 years at Waupun WI. From Wisconsin he came to Sioux County in the years 1881and has been here ever since.

In the year of 1888 he married her (Petertje Vermeer) is no his widow. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Vermeer, all of whom are still living. They are Ed Vermeer, Jacob Vermeer,, Mrs. G. L. Vande Berg, Mrs. Den Herder, Gerrit Vermeer Jr, Elizabeth Vermeer, Priscilla Vermeer and Benjamin Vermeer. The funeral services were held on Wednesday at the First Reformed church and were conducted by the Revs. Lubbers and De Pree.

Mrs. Wm. Gerrits and son Wm. and Mrs. Gerrit Groenveld were relatives who came from Waupun to attend the funeral Mr. Vermeer was an earnest Christion and an active member of the Fiist Reformed church for the past 35 years. His wife and children who will sadly miss him, have the sympathy of their many friends.
