From the Hawarden Independent of Nov 19, 1953
Hawarden Man Killed Tuesday.
Ervin Edward Henry, 62 years of Hawarden, was killed when he drove his ear into a Northwestem train at 5:35 P.m. Tuesday. The accident happened at the west end of 10th Street within the city limits of Hawarden just east of the new South Dakota bridge. The railroad tracks at this point are on a high grade and Mr. Henry drove up an incline in the road to go over the tracks- The Northwestern train, headed for Huron, S. D., did not have much speed and the Henry car hit the first freight car behind the diesel engine. It is apparent that the elderly man did not see the train.

The collision telescoped the front of the car, shoved the motor back under the floor boards, tilted up the steering column and crushed Mr. Henry's chest. The machine was thrown back only a short distance from the tracks, probably ten or 15 feet.

Mr. Henry died in the Hawarden hospital shortly after he was
taken there in an ambulance. He was alone in his car at the time
the accident. The deceased was retired and lived in Hawarden. He is survived by his widow, a daughter and a brother.

Sheriff Dykstra, deputy Ted Hoogland and patrolman George Dunn with Coroner Charles Vander Ploeg, investigated the accident late Tuesday and report that |Mr. Henry died of internal injuries suffered in the crash.
