George W. Henrich, 88, of Alton died suddenly Sunday in the Orange City Municipal Hospital of an apparent heart attack.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. Monsignor Nicholas Ruba, pastor, and the Rev. Gerald Hartz of Denison officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery under direction of the Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen.

Mr. Henrich was born Nov. 20, 1897 to Edward and Mary (Murphy) Henrich at Hurley, S.D., and came to the Alton area with his parents in 1901. He graduated from St. Mary's Academy at Alton in 1916 and attended Trinity College in Sioux City.

He married Lillian Noethe June 27, 1929 at Alton. He was a bookkeeper at Slagle Lumber Company in Orange City from 1923-35 after which he managed the Slagle Lumber Yard in Alton until 1942 He then joined his brother, Oscar, at the Alton Rendering Works and Alton Premium Feed Company, retiring in 1975.

Mr. Henrich was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Rosary Society and member and director of St. Mary's Choir for many years.
He was president of the Alton Building and Loan Association for more than 30 years and served as president of the Commercial Club for six years during which time he persuaded the city council on inaugurating the first garbage collection. He was an organizer for the movie theater in Alton.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Dr. Edward of Remsen; two daughters, Mrs. Leon (Ruth) Meis of Granville and Mrs. Carl (Mary Sue) Sierp of Atlantic; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded by his parents; two brothers, Frank and Oscar; two sisters, Mrs. J.J. (Nellie) Dolan and Mrs. Phil (Florence) Hoffman.
