Obituary: Elizabeth "Betty" Heuer, 93, of Hawarden, Iowa passed away Monday, February 6, 2012 at Hillcrest Health Care Center.Funeral service will be Friday, February 10, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Todd Bunge officiating. Interment to follow at Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Thursday, with family present at 6:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Betty was born December 19, 1918 in Sioux County, Iowa near Hudson, South Dakota to Christian and Elsie (Johnson) Serck. She graduated from Hudson High School with honors in 1936. From there she obtained her nursing degree from Broadlawns Polk Co. Hospital School of Nursing in 1941. She was the nursing supervisor at Hudson Hospital prior to her marriage. She married William "Tony" Heuer on July 15, 1943. They lived northeast of Hawarden. Betty worked at the Hawarden Community Hospital for 20 years before she retired in 1983. She was active with the Hospital Auxiliary Board, Lamp Lighter, and Sewing Circle of Trinity Lutheran Church. In her spare time Betty enjoyed quilting, needle work, and gardening. William passed away January 28, 1973 and Betty moved into Hawarden.
Betty is survived by her daughters, Janet Bieser of Lakefield, MN and Judy McCoy and her husband Ray of Sergeant Bluff, IA; sisters, Marie Cole of Hudson, SD and Eunice Vandenbos of Eau Claire, WI; sister-in- law Carrie Ann Serck of Hudson, SD; grandchildren, Jamison (Toni) Bieser, Christie (Jeff) Bieser, Lori Nyandieka, and Alicia (David) Claycomb; and 7 great-grandchildren.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents; husband; son-in-law, Roger Bieser; grandson, Dan McCoy; brother, Bernard Serck; and brothers-in-law, Kermit Vandenbos and Rolfe Cole.
