Word was received here Thursday that Jurry Wassenaar was serious[ly] ill with typhoid fever at Moosejaw, Canada, and Friday morning a message was received that he had died. Mr. J. Wassenaar the father of the deceased had gone to Canada on receipt of the first message and thus failing to receive the later message which stated that the remains would be brought here at once made the entire journey to Canada only to find that he was too late. Services were held at the First Reformed church Monday afternoon led by Rev. R. F. Schaurmann of Newkirk. The funeral took place Tuesday morning so that the deceased's father might be present at the obsequies.

Jurry Wassenaar was born at Pella in 1865. Thurty-five years ago he went with his parents to LeMars where he lived for several years and came with his parents to Sioux County. In 1887 he was united in marriage to Katie Heemstra and the couple settled on a farm in the vicinity of Orange City. About five years ago they moved to Moosejaw, Canada, where Mrs. Wassenaar died last July.

Alton Democrat of Sep 28, 1907

Last Thursday word was received by Mr. and Mrs. Wassenaar of Orange City notifying them of the illness of their son Jurrie Wassenaar who lives at Moose Jaw Canada for which place the old gentlmen started at the earliest opportunity. However he arrived too late as his son died of typhoid fever on Friday and the remains had been shipped to Iowa ere he reached Moose Jaw.

Monday afternoon was the time set for the funeral services as Mr. Wassenaar Senoir was expected home by that time. The services were held in the church on Monday, afternoon but as the old gentleman did not reach home until Tuesday the burial took place on that day. Deceased was forty-two years old. The news of Mr. Wassenaars death came as a shock to all and is keenly felt by the children who lost their mother last July. They will remain with relatives in this vicinity at least for the time being.

(From an account on ancestry.com Jurre Johannes Wassenaar born 14 May 1865 Dronrijp, Friesland, Neth. died 18 Sep 1907 Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada. He was married to Tryntje Heemstra born 17 Jun 1868 Dornrijp, Frieland, died 1 Jul 1907 Moose Jaw Saskatchewan, Canada. She was the dau of Tjeerd Fokkes Heemstra and Sijke Jans Hoekstra. His parents were Johannes Jurre Wassenaar and Tryntje Pieters Leen. Their children were: Edward, John, Frank, Katie, George, Herman and Stanley who was evidently adopted by a Burggraaf family. )

Also from the Alton Democrat, Sept. 28, "Perkins Letter":
The teacher Miss Verburg attended the fair at Orange City and was detained over Monday to attend the funeral of her uncle who died at Moose Jaw Canada and was brought to Orange City for interment. He died only ten weeks after his wife and they leave seven children from eighteen years of age to an infant in arms who will feel the loss of their parents love and care. Their relatives in Sioux county will take the children into their homes.
