SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - Helen Schenk, 87, of Sioux Center died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at Sioux Center Community Health Center.
Services were held Tuesday, Oct. 26, at Carmel Reformed Church in Carmel, Iowa, where the Rev. Arnold Punt officiated. Burial was in Carmel Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.
Mrs. Schenk was born April 5, 1912, near Carmel, the daughter of Dingeman and Antonette (Kuyper) Den Hartog. She attended Sioux Center Public School for eight years. She worked as a hired girl for new mothers, babysitting and cleaning. She married Henry Schenk on June 4, 1931, near Carmel. The couple lived on a farm near Sioux Center for 56 years. She had been a resident
of a nursing home for nine years. She was a member of Carmel Reformed Church and enjoyed
crocheting, cooking and baking. Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Christina and Severt Vander Esch of Hawarden, Iowa, and Beverly and David Berquist of Sacramento, Calif.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Esther Warntjes of Boyden, Iowa, Nelvina Campagne of Ontario, Calif; Marlys Den Hartog of California.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Dennis and Nestor; three brothers, Gys, Pete and David; and two sisters, Anna Mulder and Leona Duke.
