Obituary: IRETON, IOWA-
Marvin Schmidt, 88, of Ireton, Iowa died Sunday, September 25, 2011 at Hillcrest Care Center. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 29, 2011 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ireton, Iowa with Rev. Andrew Carlson officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon on Wednesday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
Marvin Schmidt, the son of George and Louise (Plueger) Schmidt, was born October 1, 1922 on a farm east of Craig, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Craig, Iowa. On December 30, 1944 he married Wanda Day in Brooklyn, New York at Sheepshead Bay in the Maritime Chapel. To this union four children were born, Dan, Steve, Julie, and Scott. From 1944-1946 Marvin served in the Merchant Marines. After his discharge, he farmed NE of Ireton until 1966 when the family moved into Ireton. Marvin worked at the public school and later as a manager of Coop Gas and Oil retiring in 1984.
Marvin was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where he served as an elder. Marvin did lay ministry in churches and bible classes, which he enjoyed very much.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda of Ireton, 4 children, Dan (Linda) Schmidt of Jasper, Georgia, Steve (Pam) Schmidt of Sioux City, Iowa, Julie (Shaun) Schneider of Akron, Iowa, and Scott (Maralee) Schmidt of Austin, Texas; 11 grandchildren, David and John Schmidt, Kelly Schmidt (Amy) and Amanda (Brandon) Verros, Jason (Heather) Schneider, Staff Sergeant Aaron (Amy) Schneider and Erika Schneider, Alexandra (Jeff) Florence, Megan Schmidt, Luke Schmidt, and Logan Schmidt; and 8 great-grandchildren, Christian, Noah, Nathan, Camden, Cael, Aaden, Beckett, and Brinley.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Delbert and Velma Day; one brother, Elmer; grandson, Micah Schneider; and a great-grandson, Carson Schneider
