Obituary: Rock Valley, Iowa: Jeanette "Janet" Gaalswyk, 86, of Rock Valley, Iowa, died Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Hegg Memorial Health Center in Rock Valley. Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at First Reformed Church in Rock Valley with Reverend Harlan DeJong officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Rock Valley. Visitation will be Friday, January 27, 2012 with family present from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley. Janet Gaalswyk, the daughter of Marinus and Bertha (Bos) Vonk, was born on April 24, 1925 in Steen, Minnesota. Janet was united in marriage with Alvin Gaalswyk on December 10, 1947 in Rock Valley. Together the couple farmed and raised their family east of Rock Valley until retiring in 1989. Janet was a member of the First Reformed Church of Rock Valley where she was very active as a member of the choir and women's circle. Her faith was very important to her. Janet enjoyed reading, gardening. fishing, and bird watching. She also loved to travel.

Janet is survived by her two sons, Dennis (Karen) Gaalswyk of Cannon Falls, Minnesota and Marlo (Debbie) Gaalswyk of Altoona, Iowa; two daughters, Barb (Bruce) Held of Hinton, Iowa and Joyce (Brad) Braunagel of Valley City, North Dakota; eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one brother, Marvin (Eleanor) Vonk of Rock Valley; and four sisters, Johanna Ver Mulm of Hull, Arlene (Gilbert) Van Holland of Rock Valley, Hermina Besselsen of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Bernice (Ferdinand) Tilstra of Hills, Minnesota. Janet was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and an infant daughter, Sharon.
