Carrie Venema, 70, of Sheldon died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 1994 at her residence.

Services were Saturday, Nov. 12, at the First Christian Reformed Church of Sheldon with the Rev. Mark Vander Hart and the Rev. William Van Hal officiating. Burial was in East Lawn Cemetery at Sheldon. Vander Ploeg Funeral Chapel of Hospers was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Venema was born Feb. 19, 1924, near Hospers, the daughter of Gerrit & Agnes (Kreykes) Van Surksum. She grew up near Hospers and graduated from Hospers Christian School. On Dec. 21, 1944, she married Richard J. Venema at Hospers. The couple lived on a farm for two years before moving to Grand Rapids, Mich., where he studied at Calvin College and Seminary. They served parishes in Iowa, Michigan and California; overseas for five years in New Zealand; and a mission to American Indians in the urban community of San Francisco.

Mrs. Venema was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Sheldon.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters and their husbands, Karen & Edward DeYoung of Casnovia, Mich., and Laura & Peter J. Anoschek of Waldhausen-Aalen, Germany; three sons and their wives, Dr. Gerard A. Venema and Patricia of Grand Rapids, Mich., Dr. Richard C. Venema and Virginia of Atlanta, GA, and Dr. Cornelis P. Venema and Nancy of Orange City; 14 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; her mother, Mrs. Agnes Van Surksum of Hospers; two sisters, Ella Horjus and her husband, Martin of Grand Rapids, and Wilma Vink and her husband, Marvin of Sheldon, and two brothers, John and his wife, Lavonne and William and his wife, Marjorie, all of Hospers.

She was preceded in death by her father, and a brother in childhood.
