As soon as he became eligible to enlistment, he volunteered his services to his country in the Civil War and became a member of Co. F, 132nd Ill. Vol. Inf. in which he served until the close of the war. In 1866, shortly close of the war, he was united in marriage with Eliza Jane Graves and they immediately moved to Story county, Iowa, and located on a farm near the town of Colo. To this union thirteen children were born, ten of whom are still living. They are: Thos. E. Granger of Eagle Grove, Iowa; Samuel M. Granger of Kaota, Minn.; Bertha Young of St. Paul, Minn., Frank L. Granger of Monmouth , N.D., Jay W. Granger of Watertown, S.D., Mrs. Frank Kasper of Sioux City, Iowa, Mrs. John Boyle of St. Paul, Minn., Clarence J. Soon after locating in Story county he became interested in the Grange store movement and moved to Colo, Iowa, where he engaged in business. He was elected mayor of the town and served in this capacity for seven years. In 1884 he disposed of his interests at Colo and moved to Hawarden and formed a partnership here in the grain business under the firm name of Granger & Cox. They operated a number of elevators and grain houses on the Northwestern road. He at once became identified with the business interests of Hawarden and took an active part in all matters that would help build up the town.
