John Ver Wey Died Suddenly Thursday

John Ver Wey died suddenly at his home in Rock Valley at 2:30 o'clock Thursday morning [September 5]. His death comes as a great surprise and shock to his relatives and friends as none of them knew that he had even been sick. He was up and around about his work as foreman of the section for the Milwaukee road almost until the day of his death. He had been having some trouble with his stomach before, but thought little of it until Wednesday night, and from that time he became worse until he passed peacefully away.

Mr. Ver Wey was a man of quiet unassuming disposition. He was an industrious hard-working man and was highly respected by all who knew him. He was kind in his home and will be greatly missed not only by his immediate relatives, but by many friends in Rock Valley and vicinity.

Mr. Ver Wey was born in Rock Valley vicinity April 18, 1893, and had attained the age of thirty-six years, four months and seventeen days. Practically all his life was spent in Rock Valley.

He was united in marriage October 28, 1926, with Miss Hattie De Graaf at Rock Valley, who with one little daughter, survives him. He also leaves three brothers and four sisters, [?] Ver Wey, of Alvord; Joe Ver Wey of Fairview, S.D., and Henry Ver Wey, of Iowa City; Mrs. Alex [?]man, Mrs. John Baker, of Grand Rapids, Mich., Mrs. Paul Noteboom, of Canton, S.D., and Miss Anna Ver Wey, of Rock Valley. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of many friends in their great sorrow.

Arrangements for the funeral services have not been completed.

The informant for family information was Bert Ver Wey (a brother?).

The Sioux County Cemetery Index shows him born 18 April 1893. FindaGrave.com confirms this with a photo of his headstone, and gives his daughter’s name as Bertha Ver Wey Bakker (1927-2015).
