Car-Truck Accident Monday Claims two Hawarden lives

Vicky Lynn Wulf, 17 and her brother Larry Wade Wulf,2, both of Hawarden were fatally injured in an accident Monday involving two cars and a cement truck at the Million Dollar Conner east of Hawarden. Funeral services for the two youths will be held on Thursday at the Community Reformed Church in Hawarden at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Fred Buseman of Des Moines and Rev. Harold Lenters of Ireton will conduct the services
Authorities report that the two victims were passengers in a car driven by their mother, Mrs. Lawrence (Agnes) Wulf which pulled out of a service station onto Highway 75 wqhen they were hit in the rear by a northbound cement truck. The truck was driven by Dave Roskam of Sioux Center and owned by Joe’s Ready Mix of Sioux Center. Authorities believe that the Wulf auto was hit twice by the cement truck. They report that the auto continued down the highway after being hit the first time and ricocheted off a southbound auto driven by Thomas Juhl of Sioux Center, before being hit again by the truck, forcing both into the ditch on the east side of the highway just short of the bridge located north of the intersection.

The Wulf auto reportedly caught fire shortly before going into the ditch. Mrs. Wulf and her 14 year old daughter, Cindy, the fourth passenger in the auto were able to escape from the burning auto. Vicky was pinned in the auto and Larry was believed to have been thrown from the vehicle. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Roskam reportedly jumped from the truck before it went into the ditch. Roskam was in shock at the Sioux Center Community Hospital Tuesday morning

Mrs. Wulf and Cindy were also taken to the Sioux Center Hospital. Mrs. Wulf was expected to be released on Tuesday after being treated for shock and minor injuries. Cindy remained hospitalized Tuesday with head injuries. The driver of the other auto, Juhl was uninjured. Damages to the Juhl auto , a 1971 Chevrolet passenger auto, are estimated at about $800. The Wulf auto and the cement truck were considered total losses. The cement truck was also loaded with 6 to 7 yards of concrete at the time of the mishap. The Maurice and the Orange City Fire Department were called to the accident. Sioux County Deputy Sheriff Larry Hoekstra and Trooper Bill Miller of the Iowa Highway Patrol investigated the accident.

The two youths are survived by their parents Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Wulf; two sister, Cindy and Brenda; and a grandfather, Gerrit Van Noort of Stickney, SD. Vicky was born on Feb. 18, 1956 at Mitchell, SD. And Larry was born on May 29, 1971 at Hawarden. Vicky would have been a senior at West Sioux High School this year and was the President of the RCYF group of the community Reformed Church. She also belonged to the Time Chapter in the church
