Rites for Mr. and Mrs. Ver Meulen Held On Tuesday

Funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Ver Meulen were held Tuesday afternoon at the home at 1:30 and at the First Reformed church at 2 o'clock, with Rev. H. C. Van Deelen officiating. Burial was made at the Valley View cemetery. The services were held jointly. Mr. Ver Meulen died at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 22 and Mrs. Ver Meulen died the following day at 3:45.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Ver Meulen were bed-ridden at the time of death. Mr. Ver Meulen had been in ill health for the past 20 years and Mrs. Ver Meulen suffered a stroke three weeks ago.

Mr. Gerrit Ver Meulen was born in the Netherlands on November 24, 1877. Mrs. Ver Meulen was born on March 12, 1889 in the Netherlands. They were married here on October 6, 1909.

Mr. Ver Meulen had an active interest in the Foppe store and served in that establishment from 1902 until 1931 when he retired due to poor health.

They are survived by an only son, Henry, and two grandchildren, Jack and Mary. Mr. Ver Meulen is survived by one sister, Mrs. G. Hoevenagel of Spirit Lake. Mrs. Ver Meulen is survived by two sisters, Mrs. John Van Geest of Rock Valley and Mrs. Herman Vander Well of Le Mars and one brother, Herman Bloem, of Elyria, Ohio.

Pallbearers for Mr. Ver Meulen were Max Hamann, Walter Vander Well, Jake Terpstra, Paul Pember, Bert Leck and Joe Mulder. Pallbearers for Mrs. Ver Meulen were George Van Dyke, Gerrit Harmelink, Clarence Potts, Will Evers, Gerrit De Bruin and Frank Druyvesteyn. Funeral arrangements were made by the Vander Ploeg funeral home.

Gerrit and Charta Ver Meulen

Gerrit Ver Meulen who had been ill for several years passed away at his home here Friday afternoon [June 22] at 1:30. His wife, at 3:45 p.m.

Mr. Ver Meulen was born in the Netherlands, November 24, 1877, and came to this country at an early age. He was employed in Foppe's store from 1902 to 1931 when he was compelled to retire due to poor health.

Charta Ver Meulen nee Bloem was born in the Netherlands, March 12, 1889 and came to this country at an early age. She was employed as a clerk in Eldredge Leader store.

They were married October 6, 1909, and one son, Henry was born to them.

They are survived by their son, Henry, two grandchildren, Jack and Mary. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. G. Hoevenagle of Spirit Lake. Charta is survived by two sisters: Anna, Mrs. John Van Geest, Rock Valley; and Everdena, Mrs. Herman Vander Well, LeMars, and one brother, Herman Bloem, Elyria, Ohio.

Fuuneral services were Tuesday, June 26 in the First Reformed church at 2:00.

An obituary was also published in the Sioux County Capital (July 5). It adds that Gerrit Ver Meulen was well known in the grocery department of Foppe's store, and that since his retirement his health grew steadily worse. Two brothers, John and Dick, preceded him in death. Charta Ver Meulen was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Bloem. Besides being a homemaker she also worked at times in Foppe's store. A brother, Delko of Sioux City, preceded her in death.
