JOHANNA VLIETSTRA

Johanna Zeutenhorst-Vlietstra, 85, of Orange City died Saturday, November 8, at Hillcrest Care Center in Hawarden.

Services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center with the Rev. Charles Louvau officiating. Burial was in Resthaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars.

Mrs. Vlietstra was born December 18, 1917, near Maurice to Barend and Janna (Nyhof) De Jager. She was raised on the family farm near Maurice and attended country school. She married Bernard Zeutenhorst on November 22, 1933. The couple lived in Alton and were later divorced. She married Edward Weyers on May 15, 1968. They made their home in Le Mars. He preceded her in death on December 12, 1974. She later met William Vlietstra Sr. and they were wed on January 27, 1979, making their home in Orange City. They became residents of Hillcrest Care Center in Hawarden in December 1999. He died January 31, 2000, after 20 years of marriage.

Throughout her life, she provided housecleaning for various families in the communities where she lived. She was a private person with a strong work ethic. She was a talented cook and was fond of the flowers she grew around her home.

Survivors include her eight children and their spouses, Joan and James Denver of Gravette, Arkansas, Ruth and Gerald Conner of Farmingdale, New Jersey, Howard and Fran Zeutenhorst of Hawarden, Lee and Cynthia Marven of Las Vegas, Nevada, Randy and Karen Zeutenhorst of Winterset, Russ and Eileen Zeutenhorst of Farmingdale, Stan and Becky Zeutenhorst of Brooklyn [Iowa] and Bob and Beth Zeutenhorst of Maurice; a daughter-in-law, Karla Zeutenhorst of Gayville, South Dakota; 23 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Henrietta (Wilbert) Vande Kieft and Rose (Albert) De Weerd, both of Sioux Center; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Larry Zeutenhorst; six sisters, and two brothers.

A similar obit in the Siouxland Press (Orange City, Nov. 19) gives her full name as Johanna H. Vlietstra and her nickname as "Jo", requests that memorials be directed to CHEARS Hospice & Home Health, and adds that she collected owl figurines.
