April 7, 1929 - December 21, 2011

Mrs. Marie De Ruiter, age 82, of Hull, passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2011, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.
There will be a funeral service on Saturday, December 24, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Hull. Interment will follow at the Hope Cemetery in Hull.
Marie Joyce was born on April 7, 1929, in Hull, the daughter of Peter P. and Johanna (Vanden Berg) Vis. She was raised in Hull, where she attended the Hull Elementary School and graduated from the Hull High School, at which she lettered in basketball and music.
On September 20, 1950, she married Gilbert James De Ruiter in Hull. They first made their home in Hull, but lived most of their adult lives in Rock Valley. "Gib" (Gilbert) passed away on June 20, 1997, in Rock Valley, after more than 46 years of marriage.
In April of 2010, Marie returned to Hull, where she purchased an apartment at The Colony House. She entered Pleasant Acres on December 9 of this year.
She was a homemaker, who also worked at the Hull Creamery, where she met her husband, and she drove bus for the Regional Transit Authority.
Mrs. De Ruiter was currently a member of the First Reformed Church in Hull and a former member of the First Reformed Church in Rock Valley. Over the years, Marie and her husband were very active in the church, serving on numerous committees and boards of directors. She also belonged to the Hegg Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in Rock Valley.
She enjoyed bowling, earlier in life, singing, having coffee with friends and relatives, and traveling with her brothers and sister. Most of all, she liked spending time with her children and extended family and in worship and devotions.
Survivors include her three daughters, Juanita, and her husband, Steve Schaefer, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Glenda, and her husband, Jerry Johnson, of Laurel, Nebraska; and Shirley Sandbulte, and her special friend, Larry McGehee, of Marshalltown; a son and his wife, Phil and Kellie De Ruiter, of Marshalltown; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Clayton and Mae Vis, and a sister and her husband, Arnetta and Melvin Van Peursem, all of Hull; and two sisters-in-law, Martha Vis, of Urbandale, and Coralyn Vis, of LeGrand.
In addition to her husband, Gib, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Jared, and five brothers, Anthony, Christian, Gerald, Harvey, and Peter Vis.
