ROCK RAPIDS_Walter "Walt" Ver Meer, 83, Little Rock, died Friday, July 11, at Sanford Merrill Medical Center inRockRapids.
Services were Tuesday, July 15, at Jurrens Funeral Home in Rock Rapids, with Pastor Scott Burdsall officiating. Burial was at Pleasant View Cemetery in Utile Rock, with military honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion of Rock Rapids.
Walt Ver Meer, son of John and Jeltje (Elsie) Otten, was born April 5, 1925, in Rock Rapids, where he grew up and graduated from Rock Rapids High School. He made a career out of the U.S. Navy and Air Force, serving our country for 23 years in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
He married Iris Massey on June 5, 1948, in Rock Rapids.
He and the family lived all over the world during his career in the military, including Japan, Germany and many places in the states. Mrs. Ver Meer died in April 1977. He married Lisa Gable on Aug. 31, 1979. After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, he was a deputy sheriff for three years and then worked for De Wild Grant Reckert and Associates in Rock Rapids. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Rock Rapids.
He enjoyed woodworking, watching the birds, and just spending time outdoors mowing his lawn.
Survivors include his wife, Lisa Ver Meer of Little Rock; three children, Sandra and Jack Daugherty of Bay City MI, Randy and Denise Ver Meer of Harrisburg, SD, and Michelle and Matt Vahising of Sibley; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dena Hoogland of Faribault, MN.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Iris Ver Meer; and 12 brothers and sisters.
