Morris Powell departed this life last Friday forenoon, April 6, 1973, In the University Hospital at Iowa City, following an illness of several months duration. He was 20 years of age.

Morris Lindsay Powell was born In Hawarden, Iowa, August 2,1952. He became a member of Union Creek Lutheran Church through baptism on September 18, that same year. In September of 1965 he entered confirmation instruction with 14 classmates from the two churches of our parish. After a two-year period of catechetical training he was confirmed at Union Creek Church June 11,1967. Morris received his public education at Mount Hope School and in the Akron Community School. He participated in extracurricular activities and excelled in High School football. He graduated with the class of 1970 from Akron High. Since graduation he had been busy in such employment as a school bus driver, at a service station and on the farm.

Whatever Morris did he did it with all the energy he possessed. He was of a modest and unassuming disposition who was wholly loyal to his family and to his many friends. It seemed that Morris was completely devoted to living each day and hour to the full. He became seriously ill in July of 1972 and even then he kept trying to be active as illness would permit.

Among those who survive his departure are: his parents, Arnold and Margaret Powell of Akron; his brother, Marvin of Akron; his sister, Mrs. Marilyn Sommervold of Alcester, South Dakota; his other relatives and his friends.

The funeral service in his memory was at Union Creek Lutheran Church with Pastor David J. Roy, officiating. Cathy Miller accompanied Larry Johnson on the organ as he sang "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" and "Have Thine Own Way, Lord". Robert Nielsen, Dennis Latham, Dave Port, Delmer Fickbohm, Ed Searls and Dave Ericson were active casket bearers, while Daniel Meinen, Allen Powell, Denny Lias, Gary Tucker, Dean Weyen and Norman Nielsen were honorary bearers. Interment was in Union Creek Cemetery.
