Mrs. Karen Vander Veen, age 61, of Orange City, passed away on Wednesday, June 21, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City.
There will be a funeral service on Saturday, June 24, at 3:00pm, at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. David Heilman will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.
Karen Ann was born on July 20, 1944, in Orange City, the daughter of Wein Adrian and Alvina Viola (Beimers) Vander Zwaag. She was raised on a farm near Middleburg. She graduated from Floyd Valley High School in Alton and attended Northwestern College in Orange City.
On September 11, 1964, she married Clarence Stanley Vander Veen in Middleburg. They first made their home in Orange City. In 1970, they moved to her parents' farm near Middleburg, where they have since lived and farmed. Clarence passed away on January 19, 1999, on their farm.
Karen continued living on the farm, while working at the Pella Corporation and later, Casey's Bakery, both in Sioux Center.
She was a member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church, where she was a shepherd and helped a special-needs child. She loved serving others and was a wonderful witness.
As a homemaker and farm wife, she enjoyed cooking, baking, and gardening. She especially liked doing crafts and scrapbooking and was an excellent seamstress. She often cared for her grandchildren and gave special attention to her father.
Survivors include her five children, Carma, and her husband, Kevin Louwerse, of Orange City; Corwyn Vander Veen, of Hull; Craig Vander Veen, and his wife, Kimberly, of Hull; Chris Vander Veen, and his wife, Kristi, of Sioux Center; and Cathy, and her husband, Benjamin Kooiker, of Alton; eight grandchildren, Abigail, Andrew, and Adam Louwerse; and Alex, Amber, Nicole, Justin, and Brooklyn Vander Veen; her father, Wein Vander Zwaag, of Orange City; and her sister and her husband, Audrey and Delbert Wiersma, of Spirit Lake.
In addition to her husband and mother, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, April Louwerse; a sister, Linda, and a brother, Wayne, both in infancy; and her parents-in-law, Henry and Nellie Vander Veen.
