Gerrit Vanden Burg, pioneer Alton merchant, died Dec. 28th at a Sioux City hospital, after an operation several days before for gangrene resulting from hardening of the arteries.
The deceased was born at Amersfoort, Netherlands, in 1851 and came to the United States with his parents when a small boy. In 1885 he located in Alton with his wife and three children, coming there from Chicago, and engaged in the mercantile business with Henry Gerla. Mr. Vanden Burg was for four years postmaster at Alton.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, Rev. Lou Vanden Burg of Pater:son, N. J., and Gerrit of Sheldon, and one daughter, Mrs. B. A. Bowers of Sioux City.
( Gerrit J. Vanden Burg was bon 8 Nov 1851 Amersfoort, Netherlands, married Johanna Vanden Einde, 1854-1938. Gerrit was the son of Lambertus Hendriks Vanden Burg and Johanna Muldery)
