He graduated from the Orange City High School with honors and was the first of four Ver Steeg brothers chosen as captain of the football team in their senior year. Wilbur has been an active member of the First Reformed Church in Orange City for his entire life, where he was known as a man of integrity by his peers. He served many years on the consistory of his church as an elder, treasurer, and clerk, as well as being an adult Sunday School teacher.
Wilbur served in the U.S. Navy on the island of Ulethe, in the Pacific Theater, during World War II, and was recently recognized for his 6o years of active membership in the American Legion. He was an enthusiastic sports fan of the Orange City Public Schools, Northwestern College, and the Iowa Hawkeyes, and enjoyed fishing and hunting trips with friends and family.
