Mrs. Roelof Van Zyl Was Pioneer Newkirk Resident

Mrs. Roelof Van Zyl, long a resident of Sioux county, passed on at her home in Sheldon Saturday evening, November 12, at about 6 o'clock. Mrs. Van Zyl was taken ill with a paralytic stroke Tuesday and passed into a coma from which she did not rally. She was known and loved by many Sioux county friends who regret her passing and sympathize with her bereaved husband and children.

Anna Van Boven was born in Holland 71 years ago and when a small child came with her parents to the United States. The family settled first at Cleveland but later came to Iowa and located near Newkirk, where they were pioneer residents. 48 years ago she was married to Roelof Van Zyl, and the couple farmed at Newkirk for many years, moving to Orange City after Mr. Van Zyl was elected county supervisor. They have lived at Sheldon for the past six years.

Besides her husband Mrs. Van Zyl is survived by four sons and three daughters, namely Rev. Bert of Holland, Neb.; James of Sheldon; Guy and Ralph of Alton; Mrs. Henry Van der Haar, Long Beach, Cal.; Mrs. Henry De Haan, Orange City; Mrs. Conrad Muilenberg, Glencross, S.D. She is also survived by her twin sister, Mrs. Guy Gleysteen of Sheldon, and another sister living in Michigan. With the exception of the daughter in California, all the children and their families were present at the funeral services which were held Tuesday afternoon at the First Reformed church, Sheldon. Burial was at Newkirk where brief services were held. Many old time friends braved the bitter cold to be present at the cemetery, where the pioneer parents of both Mr. and Mrs. Van Zyl are buried.
